High PageRank
By David Enders, D.c.
Larry Page and Sergey Brin published a research assignment in 1998 at Stanford University on what they called a search engine for the Internet. Today this search engine is called Google. Larry Page also created a procedure to rank the search engine results, which he named PageRank. PageRank is a trademark of Google, but the process that assigns PageRank is patented by Stanford University. Google was given the exclusive private license rights by Stanford University in exchange for 1.8 million shares of Google. What is PageRank and Why is it Important? PageRank is a link analysis algorithm to indicate the relevance of a webpage on the Internet. The link analysis algorithm basically determines how popular or important a page is in relation to all the other web pages on the Internet. In other words, PageRank gives each website or webpage a number; this number is the number one divided by the total number of web pages that are in existence at that time. How many and which websites link to other websites is then factored in. Also relevance of content is considered and a PageRank is assigned to that page. When you enter a search term, the web page that has the highest PageRank, related to that term, is then listed first, second highest second, so forth. PageRank is important when marketing on the Internet because when most people perform a search, they only look at the first page of results. The top 3 sites receive over 80% of the visitors. If your website is not on the first page of Google there is very little chance of getting any significant traffic to it. No Traffic, No Sales Related to PageRank, Google also has what is called Search Engine Results Page Rank, or SERP Rank. This is where websites are ranked in relation to specific keywords or keyword phrases. Search Engine Optimization Successful Internet Marketing requires that a website is optimized so that it’s contents contains keywords and anchor links that would help it getting ranked high on a search engine for that specific keyword or phrase.
